The car: 1997 850R Wagon with 80K miles
The problem: At low speeds (10 - 40mph) I get a deep feeling/sounding "clunk" that can be felt through the chassis whenever the gas is abruptly applied or removed. Very apparent in stop and go traffic. I get the same clunk on either acceleration or decceleration.
The transmission shifts smoothly when accelerating smoothly. The problem seems to occur worse in warmer weather, but never really goes away. I do get a "catching" or "notchy" sensation when turning at full lock, so I haven't rulled out slipping CV joints.
What has already been done/checked: The transmission had the fluid changed at 50k miles and then again at 75k. The upper torque mount has been replaced with the IPD unit. A lower torque rod was cracked, but has been replaced. (helped slightly). The front lower mount has been inspected and looks to be functioning correctly, but may need replaced within a year or so. I haven't inspected the hydraulic mounts, but was hoping they are ok as the dealer should have inspected them when they replaced the front torque rod.
I took it to the local dealer and they said the transmission is slipping at low speeds and the tranny fluid is brown and burt. Solution... replace the tranny. Those findings may prevent me from going back to that dealer as the fluid is a nice and clear, with still a pink color. I also have a filter installed. So, I really don't think they looked into the problem too much.
Ideas?
