I don't recall seeing any smoke from my tail pipe, but round the tail pipe are sooty like you said. Black ash-like covering the crome tip. Then again i don't get to see my tail pipe when I'm driving. I don't know if anything coming out of it at all though.
Soo far i'm not getting any error code on my computer means that my O2 sensors are ok. As for vacuum leaks I will check on those next.
I always check and make sure that the tires are at the correct preasure. I'm using Nitrogen gas as suggested by one of the tire shop here to inflate them and it helps soften the ride a bit. It also suppose to help on the gas too cause it's a bit lighter but I don't see it happening.
