instrument lights 850 1996

I am the happy new owner of a 96 850 wagon just broken in at 150k. Nicely maintained 1-owner vehicle. I'm psyched. [And yes, I've already dropped the requisite $1500 into it to get it top notch].

I have a question that might seem a little silly: the little display at the bottom of the gauge cluster - the one that has the clock and outside temp [and I guess other functions in fancier 850s] - is it supposed to be lit up when the instrument panel lights are on? It seems silly to have a display like this that is completely unusable at night. That said, I'm not anxious to take apart the dash to find those little 1.2v light bulbs buried in there if there's nothing to be found.

Thanks. This board is great... I've already found and fixed the rear seat squeak that was making me lose my mind.
