Change Tranny Fluid or Not? 850 1997

I have a 1997 850 with 110K miles. The transmission fluid was never changed when I purchased it. The manual and two local dealers all say "don't change it - not necessary - just inspect the level periodically". I have a hard time believing it. On most cars, changing the fluid for the first time at this many miles means almost certain failure of the transmission. Thoughts, advice, and/or experience? Thanks.
