Passenger Side Dash Loose 850

Unfortunately a fairly common problem. Under the plastic cowl where the wipers are mounted there are four (4) 4 -5 inch bolts that go thru the firewall thru threaded retainers secured on standoffs on the plastic dash. Over time and heat, the standoffs break/crumble leaving NOTHING for the bolts to secure to.

The entire dash must be pulled and the stand offs built back up so as to secure the dash. If you don't fix it- the dash's weight will bear down and overstress other components and cost even more $$$'s.

I know. My 1995 Volvo 850 has 3 of the 4 bolt standoff broken and the dash is loose. If 3 bolts were holding , there would be no problem. I have an excellent and trustworthy indy volvo specialist who I've got an appointment to repair for $300.

It's not an issue that you want to leave unrepaired. If you can move the dash as much as you say, more than one of the four bolt standoff is shot. Doubt seriously that the one litle bolt really fixed the problem. Sounds like if the dash is moving one or more of the primary standoffs are shot.

Sorry to be the bearer of this news- but it is something I have to get done in the next few weeks myself.

Gotto love these Swedish engineers - making cars with dashboards that come loose from the firewall. Like a woman, it's a love hate relationship these cars!
