This is part of the thread that scared me into fixing it..... V70-XC70 1998

"Well, went to back the T5 out of the garage today, released the E-brake, put her in reverse... and it felt like I backed into a wall. No rearward or forward movement whatsover. Heard a nice loud clunk tho.

"Took everything apart, located to right side. I cannot get this thing to release, even with full slack on the E-cable from inside the console. Rotor is stuck on there like stink to ...nevermind. From peaking in the lug bolt holes, it seems the entire brake shoe and spring assembly rotated counterclockwise about 10 degrees."

"Anybody have problems with this before? I managed to get some rearward mobility and 5mph worth of forward. Gonna limp over the dealer tomorrow, thankfully its close."

(later)

"What concerns me now is the apparent rotation of the whole assembly within the rotor. I've seen that setup behind the rotor numerous times and also had the pictures in my manual to go by. The adjusting knob just ain't where it's supposed to be."

(later)

"You motivated me to take the morning off of work and fuss with it. I managed to get it off with a few good whacks from a rubber mallet (actually got under the car for better leverage)."

"Lo and behold, the material had sheared off both pads. One was in one whole piece, the other in 2 + shards. No wonder it locked up. Anyhoot, rigged the car to drive to the dealer, got my pads, ... 2 hours later had, had both wheels back on and running fine. ... "

"Word of advice to anyone who hears a decently loud clunking noise from the e-brake, fix it immediately. At least I saved myself several hundred dollars in towing, dealer repair, and rental car."
