What is this ?sensor for ? 850

There is a sensor located on the heatshield in the engine compartment. It's black and round. I'm curious because mine has been moved- it was cut out and attached over near the engine mount, why would anyone do this? my heat shield also has been cut about 8 inches- as if someone was trying to repair somthing behind that area- I never noticed it when I bought the car because I was not familiar with these cars. Any ideas? thanks.
