ABS/TRACs lights on - Sensor problem or so I am told S60 2001

My S60 only has 45,000km on it. All three "ABS/STC/Emision service required" lights came on recently. I brought the car into the authorised Volvo workshop and was told that it was an 'intermittant' problem and that the ABS sensors are faulty. I double-checked with the engineer that it is not the ABS module problem (which is common based on what I have read in forums like this), and was told that it was only the ABS sensor. I am currently appealing a rejected "goodwill claim" from Volvo. Whilst waiting for the appeal, I have been driving with the ABS/Tracs/Emission lights on. Lights do go off sometimes, and sometimes only one of either ABS or Emission lights come on.

However, for the past couple of days, there is a loud grinding sound coming from the front wheels. This usually happens within the first few minutes upon starting the car and picking up speed. There is also "clicking" sounds which turns into "crunching", "grinding" sounds as I step in the brakes. I can also feel the grinding on the brake pad. It usually goes off after I come to a complete stop.

Is this normal when there is a problem with the ABS sensor? Went to another Volvo mechanic to get a second opinion and he seems to think so.
