As always, thanks to everyone who contributes to this forum.
Like many of you, I get poor cooling from my A/C, where compressor starts to cycle on and off due to low pressure. I have topped up the R134A with a store-bought kit (to about 25-30 lbs on the gauge that came with the kit) and the system works pretty well for a few to several weeks. I didn't do it many times because I didn't want to introduce too much oil or some other contamination. I never put in any kind of stop-leak substances.
Evidently the evaporator is a weak point in this system, and this is a lot of expensive work to replace. It seems like a good idea to make very sure everything else is tight before getting into it.
Has anyone found leaks in other places? Did UV leak testing work for you? Should you conclude it must be the evaporator if you can't find another leak? Did anyone with a new evaporator have a look at their old one to see what happened to it?
Also, has there been any redesign on the evaporators?
Finally, since there is no high-side bleed on this system, how can you evacuate it? It doesn't seem like a good idea to refill the system very many times without purging it. If there is a leak, air might get in the same way the R134A gets out. When the system is not in use, like during the winter, it might fill with air, unless the leak occurs only under high pressure.
