Jeff,

Those switches are covered with a rubberized coating.

Using the wrong cleaning products may cause it to dissolve. Also fingernails may scratch the coating allowing body oil and/or other substances to penetrate and remove the coating.

You may either remove the coating completely or respray a rubberized layer on again. Check the archives for information of products.
