ECC compressor not cycling 850 1996

My 1996 850 compressor won't cycle off. The Auto/AC off switch works, that will disengage the compressor clutch. But on Auto, no matter what temperature is selected, even driver/passenger sides at max hot, compressor stays on, with damper control in any position. Where should I look, the temperature sensor's in the duct? The 1996 model year ECC fault codes require a trip to the dealer, I'd like to try on my own first. A/C charge seems adequate and unrelated to this problem. Just seems like no signal is being sent to the compressor relay to let it know temperature is satisfied. If I disconnect the battery, will that clear any codes stored on the ECC?
