1995 850 Clutch

Hello all,

Recently had a problem selecting first gear, or reverse when in the garage the pedal felt a bit slack, but was ok after this happened twice before vacation not to be stuck I checked and found the master cylinder damp, brake fluid level was above minimum mark.I thought.
I picked up a new one and installed it ( fun job my arms are still bleeding)
When bleeding it at first it was fine then went soft I kept adding new brake fluid and bleeding same thing, looking at the Brake master cyl. I noticed a hole inside the reservoir and a small channel at the back I could see the level raise and drop when the clutch was depressed, I pumped brake fluid directly into it and the clutch bleed up fine.

Question. In my rush to go on hoildays I think I may have replaced a good clutch cyl. the car was on jack stands at the front so the brake fluid level was hard to see, I am thinking that with normal brake wear the fluid level dropped below the hole for the clutch there was lots for the brakes but not enough for the clutch.
I am keeping the brake fluid level at the Max. mark now.

Any thoughts.
Thanks
