Strange A/C Operation 850

Something strange happens with my a/c in my 95 850T Wagon. System has been re-charged (no leaks found) and is ice cold. When the system is on auto mode, it blows nice and cold (though the temp controls sometimes have to be cycled all the way down to the coldest setting for it to kick in, then readusted to desired temp, i.e., 72). While a/c is blowing cold on auto, if I slide the switch to the right to choose a fan speed, it gets warm and humid, unless I switch to recirculate mode which then gets the a/c blowing cold again. Why would choosing a fan speed make the a/c shut down unless I switch the recirculate switch on? I wanted the a/c to blow high for the rear passengers the other day and I noticed this happening it does it all of the time unless the recirculate switch is on when choosing the fan speed. Auto mode works fine every time.
