carpet under both passenger side and driver side mats is WET....Why? Help! V70-XC70 2004

I cleaned out my wife's car today and when I took out the mats from in front of the rear seats, the ones under the driver and passenger seat, the carpet was wet. At first (when I took out the one under the passenger seat), I thought that my son must have spilt something because that's normally where he sits, but then when I took out the other mat, the floor board under that mat was also wet. Doesn't seem to be sticky...just smells really musty. I am letting the car air dry now with all window down and back open.
the only thing that comes to mind is that it's been awfully wet (rain) these days and that we went to the beach several weeks ago. Could condensation cause this? Or...do I have a leak somewhere? If it's from condensation, I would have to say that this is a design flaw.

If anyone has had this experience, please respond. Whatever the cause, I need to get it fixed.
