Water Leak, Passenger Side, Heater Box 850

I just fought my way through troubleshooting a water leak that appeared on the passenger side front in rain on my '93 850. I post it here so others can find & clear all the drains. The leak comes out from under the dash, actually dripping off the tray under the glove box. If the tray is removed, I found water dripping from the heater box.

After a few false fixes here is what I found. There are a total of 4 drains for the cowling area. Two are easy to locate as they are in the plastic cover for the cowl area & each have a hose attached to drain out the bottom of the engine compartment. These can be removed & cleared of debris by forcing a garden hose discharge through them.

Your not done yet!….. There are two more drains in the sheet-metal portion of the cowling under this plastic. Remove the windshield washer arms & a handful of screws & this plastic panel comes off. You will easily find a drain hole on the passenger side that must be cleared of debris. Stick the spray of the garden hose in there to clear it. The 4th drain is difficult to find & clear. It is on the driver’s side & is a mate to the opposite side. Unfortunately, that puts it right under the fuse box. Find the depression in the sheet-metal upright section of the cowling to figure out exactly where the drain is (use the passenger side as a model). Once found a combination of wire & the direct stream of a hose can clear this without having to remove the fuse box. It is just accessible in front of the fuse box.

Until you find & clear all 4, there is a chance of leaks. If your lazy, the passenger side ones are the most critical.
