Can't turn TRACS off 850

I have a 96 855R. Had it over a year. Great car. When I try to turn off TRACS, the TRACS light is lit while I hold the (momentary) switch. When I release the switch, the light goes out. No matter how long I hold the switch down (from instantaneous to many seconds), it won't light up to let me know TRACS is defeated.

Any ideas?

PS - no ABS light has ever been lit and I know the ABS functions properly.
