Transmission Problem S80 2001

My transmission stopped engaging at 75,000 miles. About I week ago I noticed something that sounded like a loose ball joint or tailpipe hanger which made a thud sound when going over bumps. Last night as I was driving home the transmission acted strange and when I stopped I could not get it to engage. As a matter of fact I had it in reverse and it went slightly forward. Is this common with 2001 S80 T6's? I am towing it to the dealer this morning.
