tranny 850 850 1994

hello friends,
My 850 wagon 94 non turbo won't engaged when tranny is in reverse mode, it still goes forward? I tried shifting from all levels then back to Reverse and is still won't back out? I tried to drive around but the car does not run normal, it jerks. I was at work when my reverse gear failed. Is this a major tranny problem or just one of those sensors?
