During Frances (the hurricane) I had to attempt to make my way into work. I noticed the orange arrow blinking and found I was starting out in 3rd. I have had this problem before (sticky pnp switch) but not like this. After driving for a couple of miles (starting out in 3rd, slowly gain momentum), I pulled over and I noticed I had NO forward momentum other than coasting. I parked the car and played with the shifter, etc but no go. I walked home as Frances was bearing down figuring I would let the car sit (was in a safe well lit spot). I went back on Monday and still had the problem although after playing with the shifter the arrow did in fact go away, but I still had no lock up when placed in D or R, etc. I had the car towed and to my horror I saw tranny fluid on the deck of the wrecker... Starting to cry now...
Anyway last week I did have the CV joints replaced - actually I had both axle assemblies done) and after my mechanic put the car on the lift found that one of the axle had pulled away from the bar (??) that ties the pass axle to the transmission. I know the axles are the same length but on the pass side there is an extra piece that is used to cover the additional distance to the wheel assembly I guess. Hope that one makes sense:) Anyway there is a clamp the bolts to the fram (I guess) that joins the two pieces together (axle and extension?)
Since the clamp fell off the pieces separated and that was why the car would not move. The end that goes into the tranny was also out of position.
My real questions here are:
1) Did the separation of the piecee (axle/bar, bar/tranny) cause possible
internal damage to the tranny?
2) Did this cause possible damage to the axle assembly?
3) The clamp was not found so my mechanic headed to the junkyard as this is
not a "stockable" item (probably mail order but time is/was a factor). My
question here is that one junkyard would not sell him the piece as it is a
stress piece? If this is true could I be getting myself in more trouble by
using a "used" piece and not buying it new?
All replies and/or help appreciated - Thanks!!
