First thing I would check is if you can move the shifter full motion from the "P" to the "1". If not check to see if the car is really in PARK when the shifter is in the "P" position. Put the car in park on a slight hill and slowly release the brakes, if the car rolls in park, the car is actually in neutral and you probably have misadjusted linkage. Not that big a deal. If the car does not roll then the situation needs to be checked by a mechanic.
