rear taillight lens replacement 850 1994

Has anyone had the joy of DIYing this? There are instructions at Bay 13, and I got the replacement from Groton. The instructions say, "then, with an 8mm socket, remove the 4 bolts that hold the lens in place..."
The bolts are in a position where I can't get to them at all. Advice from a seasoned professional?
