rear differential failure in '99 s70 awd S70

My 99 s70 awd has 62k miles and was just diagnosed with a failing rear differential. The car has been regularly serviced by the dealer. At the60k service the electronic throttle body was replaced. The checjk engine light is on with an associated air mass sensor problem which I am ignoring since the car runs well and passed the state emission test. However, the techs heard funny noises which they think is the rear differential. For while before there werre episodic "thunks" when reversing into a parking place with the wheel hard over, unfortunately I was in denial about the possible implications for the drivetrain. Have others experienced (premature) rear differential failure in awd volvos?
