Growling noise S70 1998

I have a 98 S70 that has just started to develop a loud growling noise at speed in the front end. This car has 90,000 miles, had regular routine service, and not abused. It almost sounds like very aggressive truck tire noise on dry pavement but I have Michelin MX4 all season tires that have been very quiet driving. The noise is most pronounced on deceleration and accelaration and prominent around 50 - 60 MPH. Just returned from a long highway trip and the noise is getting much louder.

Has anyone experienced this? And am I looking at a transaxle problem?
