accident; rearended; rear bumper replacement V70-XC70 1999

Got rearended this weekend, which drove read bumper downard.
I'm know nothing about the construction of the car, but it looks like there are
two mounting brackes welded onto the ends of longitudinal framing members that
hold the bumper. These are bent, but otherwise the rest of the car seems fine--
maybe a slight change in the right rear door's opening--can't really tell.

A body shop estimated $5,000 and two weeks for repair. Can it be this high?
Suppose I just bend the mounts back, attach a new bumper, and drive off.
Do you think there could be any lingering damage that makes the car unsafe?

(Why I care: Don't have collision and responsible drive may be uninsured.
Welcome to California!)

Thanks,
Andrew (brand new to bboard!)
