Odometer failure 850 1996

I recently purchased an 850 GLT (1996)with a non working Odomoeter. I have read several stories on this site that mention about gear replacements. My question: How do I remove the glass and face plate to get to the Odometer to ensure it is a gear failure and not some other problem? Is this a relatively easy thing to do? Volvo wants to charge about $550-600 to do the job. Also, I believe the 1996 model has a computer chip, can I retrieve the actual engine miles off the chip and make the odometer match? (BTW - the speedometer is functional).

Pictures for dash removal would be a great help, but as always, any help would be much appreciated

Regards
Chris
