Air Mass Meter S70 1999

I've just had the CEL come on (again!) and the dealer (after trying to sting me £30 to read it!) has advised I need a new Air Mass Meter....

Questions.....
1. Is this an item that needs a software download before it will work?
2. What damage is likely to be caused by running with a defective one (looking about a month before I'm in one place long enough to get it done)
3. What sort of price is reasonable (my local dealer has quoted £285 to replace it!)
4. Is this a regular 'failure' item or will I be safe enough to get one from a scrapyard and then get the software reloaded (what a pain that system is!)

Thanks in advance!!!

Alastair
