Clunking during low-speed braking or acceleration V70-XC70 1998

At low speed, when either stepping on the brake or accelerating (it has to be one or the other, steady speed doesn't seem to do it), I get a nerve-racking CLUNK. It feels like it is coming from right under middle of the car. It started today, and my wife reports that it seems to happen more when the car has sat for a few minutes. It is surprisingly loud, and you can feel something banging under the car. Tonight I took for a test drive and also heard a bearing-type sound when I had the driver's window rolled down.

I suspect the rear drive shaft, but am not sure why the sound is so dramatic. Any ideas?
