Sounds like you have a valet key. To find out, try the key in the trunk lid and if it doesn't work, the PO gave you a valet key.
If it works in the trunk, the door, and the ignition then there is a failure in the glove box lock. You will need a locksmith at this point. Forcing it open will ruin the cover or the box or both.
