850 / no acceleration / vibration/ check engine light 1997

unusual situation, was driving back from the store, car running as usual, stop at a red light, and when i press on the gas, suddenly the car starts to sputter and almost wants to stall, it keeps going readily, but when i press on the accelerator the engine sputters and it has no pickup and puts off a wierd vibration. i let the car sit for about 90 minutes, fired it up, drove (creeped) around the block and the check engine light came on wiht the same engine behavior. so basically i dont think this thing will get up to highway speeds. since the check engine light is on, i think it has to do with emissions or something. it might be due for new distrib / plugs. might be something with the pnp / gears, it will turn over, idle normally (or so it seems) then when i put it in gear (with my foot on the brake) only then does then engine start knocking / vibrating. that leads my to believe it is a transmission issue, but the trans is in really good shape. i noticed my gas cap wasn't turned all the way to the clicking position (that would account fo rhte CE light) so i tightened it, and still the same behavior.

any suggestions.

i had the same thing happen on an 88 760 turbo that i also owned, "no juice" when you step on the gas"
