bypassing the barometric sensor V70-XC70 1998

My 60,000 mile servicing revealed a faulty barometric sensor which will cost $300 to replace and will cause the check engine light to stay on. I would prefer not to replace it since we do not plan to do any mountain driving. Is it possible to disarm / bypass it so the CEL will go off? If it stays lit, how will I know if some other part fails or if there is another problem?
