850 replaced by S series? 850

I am still shopping for a used Volvo but I have started considering something newer than the 700-900s. I have been looking at the 850s, I am under the impression that the 850 was rebadged as an S- series in it's later years. Is this true? Was there an S- series that was the same powertrain as the 850? I am just wondering how much of my 850 research applies to the newer S series machines.
