Tailgate perma-stuck in locked position V70-XC70

Hey there gurus,

The lock on my 99 V70 AWD is stuck in the locked position and was working only intermittently before quitting all together. I have partially taken off the panel exposing the lock mechanism. I can't get the panel all the way off because I can't open the tailgate all the way. However, even with the panel partially off I can reach in to manipulate the mechanism.

I can reach it, but I can't move it! This thing is stuck. The piston that comes out of the black box won't budge and I can't find anything that will move allowing me to unlock the door. Once I can unlock the door I can finish removing the panel and remove the whole mecanism to relube or replace.

Anyone out there an expert on this who can lend a hand?

If this doesn't work, I'm contemplating taking the plates off and leaving in a bad side of town.
