understanding how it works..... V70-XC70 1998

The air pump system reduces emmissions during cold start ups. That's when the pump comes on and blows air thru the sas valve to allow faster warm up and to help burn off combustion gases, that are produced in greater quantity with a cold engine.

If you disconnect the air pump, you'll trip the CEL light. I don't know what would happen if you disconnect the hose from the sas valve and leave it open.

The air pump is not connected to the intake so there is no vaccuum leaks. After warm up the air pump goes off, sas valve closes and the system won't be used until next am with cold start up.

Understanding how the system works, it's what makes drilling the hole a must if you want to preserve the air pump.
