Better to drill the hole with the new pump on your workbench, do not drill thru the hose.

Before you remove the old pump make a mark on the lowest portion of the pump just below the nipple. This is where you want to drill the hole in the new pump, and clean the shavings before install.

Don't worry about other people, if you believe it makes sense like I do, then you'll do it, otherwise leave it alone.
