1996 ABS 850

So, in the 9 months that I have had this car, 1996 855M w/o tracs, I have had the ABS light come on 3 times. Each time the light did not return when I restarted the car more than half an hour later. Tonight was strange though: I stopped at the store and left my wife in the car with the car idling. When I returned, the ABS light was on. This struck me strange because as far as I know the abs diagnostics shouldn't be working with the car sitting stopped. Any idea what would cause the light to come on in this situation?
