CEL and CA Smog Check S70 1998

The CEL has recently lit up but goes away after driving for a while. It has happened about 3 times now and is currently off. I need to take it in for a California Smog Check but haven't had a chance to have the codes read. I'm considering taking a chance with the test until I can take it into a Volvo shop to analyze the CEL issue. Will the test detect the code and fail even if it is not lit? Thanks.
