Fuel guage reading ⏭] 𖛊 non turbo] 850 1997

Just purchased a beautiful 1997 850 wagon today and have now noticed that the fuel guage is not reading properly. I put a few gallons in it yesterday because it appeared to be low when I was about to take it to the mechanic. The guage rose but I only put about 3 gallons in the car. This evening I filled the tank and found that the gauge is now below where it was yesterday (reading empty). The ignition was off when I filled the tank. (owner's manual says not to put gas on when the ignition is on because it will cause a faulty reading.) I do not believe that I turned the gas cap until I heard a click, but when the problem appeared, I then got out and turned the gas cap, but the fuel guage is still not working properly.

What can I do? Thanks in advance for your advice.
