Gearshift release button and dead battery 850 1997

Could somebody tell me whether my gearshift release button is defective or not? Ran the battery down and tried to shift the car out of park, stepping down on the brake, etc. But do you think it would come out of park, even by pressing down on the release button beside the shift lever? Absolutely not. I had this happen twice before--every time in fact that the battery was dead. Is it possible to get an 850 out of the park mode with the battery dead or disconnected, or is this some feature Volvo designed into it? Dick
