Alternator or Regulator? Related to knocking? 850

My 96 850 97K has a charging problem. I have done various things to trouble shoot that have not been conclusive. Both Sears and AutoZone have tested and say that the alternator is bad based on low current. If that is true, how can I tell whether I need to replace the regulator or the whole alternator? I already pulled the regulator and the "brushes" didn't look too worn, but I am not really sure exactly what they should look like.

Also, I have read that if the battery is weak it can cause the fuel system to tend rich. Does rich mixture cause engine knock? If so, could this also explain why I am getting occasional P0326 OBDII errors tripping the CEL? I can feel the knock sensor retarding the timing (loss of power) but it frequrently corrects itself within a few miles or within the same day.

Thanks, Calvin (92 940 198K, 96 850 Turbo 97K)
