Intermittent A/C problems '97 850 T-5 850 1997

I have two separate problems with A/C. I purchased car recently and don't know history of the system. As per some other posters I am doing all I can to lengthen life of the expensive evaporator coil by turning off the A/C about 30 seconds prior to arriving at destination, however, my A/C problem has nothing to do with that. Here are the issues:

#1: Every now and then the REC switch and the A/C switch lights flicker back and forth. I'll pay more attention next time, but I believe it was after the car started, but I hadn't turned the A/C on. Once A/C on, its ok.

#2 Ocassionally the A/C will stop blowing cold air and just blow air. This may last for two or three minutes and then its back to cold air with no intervention on my part.

Its still hot here in Houston! Thanks for any and all info!
