The pre-2004.5 S40/V40’s were built in a JOINT venture factory. Probably not directly under Volvo supervision. But all of the components in the S40/V40 (including the engine) are Volvo components! Only one component is shared between the Volvo and Mitusbishi built on the same assembly line. Both companies developed the assembly plant and their own cars so they could both be produced on the same line.

We have been extremely happy with our 2000 Volvo V40. We purchased it with 40K miles at the end of 2003 from a dealer (100K Certified pre-owned warranty). I do most maintenance myself, so we were only at the dealer a few times for adjustments when we first go it and recently for an O2 sensor.
