i prefer synthetic. better oil all obviously. More expensive. 5x the cost.
if you are doing it yourself make sure you get either volvo OEM filter or a Mann filter. No special tools required. You should be able to remove the filter by hand. if not then a oil filter wrench supplied at any parts store.
Always hand tighten the replaced filter and use only the proper socket or wrench on the drain plug. And again do not over tighten the drain plug.
