Timing belt rubbing on cover 850 1993

1993 850 My timing belt has about 8000 miles on it. Just noticed noise coming from the timing belt area. I took off the cover and could see where the belt was rubbing aginst the inside of the cover. The engine ran fine with no noise with the cover off. The cover seems to be properly fitted but when installed the noise returns. The belt looks to be following the proper route and not noticeable off center. Any ideas?
