If it's STILL only reading 12V at the battery AFTER the cable was replaced/repaired, something else is wrong. I repair these cars daily and bad battery cables are NOT a common problem nor should they be getting hot (very high resistance if so).
When the battery is loaded with a Vat-40, amperage should go to max output (over 100 amps depending on alternator) and battery voltage should normally read about 14V when charging the battery (unloaded) with ANY car.
