I own a 1993 850 GLT with 156k miles. My son drove it for the past two years. He did not have any battery problems when he was using the car everyday. He went away to college and I use the car very little. About two weeks after he stopped using the car, I tried to start the car but the battery was dead. I jump started the car and it was OK one or two days latter. However, if I let the car sit for over 4 days, the battery went dead. My son had installed an extra amp and new fog lights, so I disconnected everything he had added except a replacement radio. The battery still ran down in a few days. The battery was over 2 years old, so I just installed a new battery two days ago.
The car started immediately. However, I am still concerned that something is draining the battery. I feel that if the battery is fulled charged it should be able to start the car after sitting for 3-4 weeks. IS THIS TRUE?
I removed the groud connection from the battery and measured the current between the neg on the battery and the neg connector with the car turned off. It read 0.08 amps. At 12 volts, this should be about 1 watt. IS THIS REASONABLE? HOW MUCH CURRENT SHOULD THE CLOCK, RADIO, Etc. DRAW WHEN THE IGNITION KEY IS TURNED OFF? WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO SEE IF ANYTHING IS DRAINING THE BATTERY?
