Oil leak S40-V40 2000

My s40 just developed a very slow oil leak. The mechanic told me that the leak is either from the lower oil pan gasket or the rear main gasket (which apparently abbuts the transmission). Without pulling it apart there is no way to tell because the oil is everywhere. Has anybody else had similar problem or had to have either of these two items replaced?

Also, the check engine light just came on during all of this and I am not sure if it is related.

Thanks.
