winter starting noise 850

My better half's 850 makes a brutal screeching noise on start up in cold weather only. It made this noise last year every morning after the first frost and our excellent mechanic JD could not make the sound at his shop even with the 850 staying overnight. The sound continues about 5 agonizing seconds after the motor starts and fades away. After the car runs up in temp the engine starts normally. It seems like the starter gear or solinoid is sticking in cold weather. Has anyone had this problem? Do I remember hearing that removing the starter is PIA? Thanks
