Smoked the ECC Unit in the Dash 850 1993

Within about two minutes of starting the car last Friday I had smoke coming out of the ECC unit in the dash. Removing it the next day, it appears that all the damage is contained in the unit itself and not in the wiring under the dash. I want to replace the entire unit, but, wonder if it was some other trouble in the electrical system that caused the unit to smoke (as opposed to a defect in the ECC unit itself). The performance of the ECC had been a little flaky prior to this, so, I think that maybe it has been going bad and something finally burned its way through to make a short.
I don't want to set a new $ 700 unit in there and have it smoke too. Has anyone replaced the unit in their 850 without further incident?
There are no other indicators that there are any electrical problems (fuses ok, etc).
