Gasoline Octane Rating: 87 or 91? S70 2000

I have a 2000 S70 GLT and had a question about what gasoline octane rating to use for this vehicle. The owner's manual states:

"Volvo engines are designed for optimal performance on unleaded premium gasoline with an octane rating...of 91 or above." However, the last sentence of that same section states: "The minimum octane requirement is 87."

This statement leads me to believe that I can use gasoline with an octane rating of 87 and not damage the engine. Is this an accurate conclusion?

Your insight is greatly appreciated.

Larry
