Wavy vertical lines in side glass, visible when you wash car 850 1997

I have used various glass cleaners to scrub out water deposits on the glass of my 140 and 240 Volvos. But when I wash my 850 I see these wavy vertical lines, about a quarter of an inch apart, on the side windows, and though I have used some of the mildly abrasive glass cleaners which are 90% elbow grease and 10% technology, I have been unable to remove them. Am I seeing something inherent in the glass itself at manufacture, or is this some kind of deposit that has yet to yield to the latest chemical discovery? Dick
